Apple mouse is not connecting to a Mac computer

The Apple wireless mouse, officially known as the Magic Mouse that helps you to access your Mac with ease, has two variants; Magic Mouse and Magic Mouse 2. You might be having either of the ones. The Magic Mouse has a removable battery cover and uses 2 AA batteries, whereas Magic Mouse 2 has a built-in lithium-ion battery, which is rechargeable. Along with that, the Magic Mouse 2 also has a lightning cable port. For the Magic Mouse 2 to be paired to a Mac device, the computer must run on macOS 10.11 or later. Both these Apple mice can be connected to Mac over Bluetooth. However, if your Apple mouse is not connecting to a Mac computer, then the troubleshooting steps you should follow to pair them are given below.

Check whether the mouse is turned on:

  • Step 1:Whether you own the Magic Mouse or the Magic Mouse 2 doesn’t matter. The mouse should be turned on so that it can be detected and paired with your Mac computer.
  • Step 2:Make sure the mouse is turned on.
  • Step 3:The switch to turn on the mouse is located at the bottom. Slide it to turn on the mouse.
  • Step 4:In Magic Mouse, when you slide the switch, you can see a green LED lit up. In Magic Mouse 2, when the switch is slid up to turn it on, you will see the green-colored surface.
  • Step 5:Usually, when the mouse is turned on, the Mac should be able to detect it via Bluetooth.

Check whether Bluetooth is turned on:

  • Step 1: On your Mac computer, click the Apple menu icon located at the top left corner.
  • Step 2: Select the System Preferences option from the drop-down list.
  • Step 3: Then, locate and click the Bluetooth icon to open it.
  • Step 4: When the Bluetooth window opens, check whether it is turned on.
  • Step 5: Now, look at the list of Bluetooth devices available. If the mouse was paired to your Mac earlier, then it will be listed.
  • Step 6: Click the Pair or Connect button to pair your mouse with the Mac.

Check the charge in the mouse:

  • Step 1: Even after turning on the mouse and Bluetooth, if the mouse is not discovered by the Mac computer, then check the battery charge of the Apple mouse.
  • Step 2: If it is a Magic Mouse, then replace the batteries.
  • Step 3: If it is a Magic Mouse 2, then charge it by connecting to your Mac using a USB to Lightning cable.

Pair the mouse to your Mac:

If the mouse is detected in the Bluetooth device list, but if it doesn’t connect, then follow the steps given below.

  • Step 1: Connect your Mac mouse to your Mac device using a Lightning to USB cable, or use another wired mouse to set up the wireless mouse.
  • Step 2: Open the Bluetooth preferences window on your Mac computer.
  • Step 3: Turn on Bluetooth.
  • Step 4: Click on the X icon at the right end of your Apple mouse.
  • Step 5: Confirm to remove the mouse from your Bluetooth preferences.
  • Step 6: Turn off your mouse and turn it on again.
  • Step 7: Turn off Bluetooth on your Mac and turn it on.
  • Step 8: Now, when your Apple mouse is discovered and listed in the Bluetooth window, click the Pair button at the right end.
  • Step 9: This will connect the Apple mouse to your Mac computer.
